한성우(b.1987)는 매일 마주하는 일상의 풍경이나 장소를 주제로 작업을 한다. 그러나 대상 그 자체를 재현하는 대신, 인적이 사라진 공간이나 오래된 벽과 바닥, 혹은 신체에 남겨진 흔적 등 전경에 가려진 이면에 더 관심을 둔다. 작가는 기존의 의미나 용도가 사라진 자리에 개인의 주관적 감상을 투영해 눈앞의 풍경을 해체하고 다시 조합하는 방식으로 자신이 세상을 인식하는 방식을 재현하고자 한다. 2020년부터는 유행이 지나 사람들에게 외면받는 꽃무늬 벽지나 고정되지 않는 시간으로서의 환절기를 주제로 점차 추상화된 화면을 구축해왔다. 근래에는 다양한 매체를 활용하여 작가 특유의 마티에르(matière)를 보다 얕게 얹거나, 같은 대상을 두고 구상에서 추상까지 여러 캔버스에 나누어 작업해보는 등 재현의 방식을 다양화하고 있다.

에이라운지, 서울(2023, 2017); 송은아트큐브, 서울(2020); Space BM, 서울(2015); 윌링앤딜링, 서울(2013) 등에서 개인전을 가졌으며, «Books and Things», Helen J Gallery, 로스앤젤레스(2022); «Summer Love», 송은, 서울(2022); «몸짓을 따라가며, 주변을 배회하고, 중심에 다가서려는», 학고재 청담, 서울(2020); «Dramatic Scenes», 스페이스K, 과천(2017) 등 국내외의 전시 공간에서 열리는 유수의 단체전에 참여했다. 2023년에는 난지미술창작스튜디오의 프로그램에 참여했으며 2024년에는 국립현대미술관 고양 레지던시에 입주할 예정이다.

Han Sungwoo (b.1987) works with everyday sceneries and places as his main subjects. Instead of representing the subjects themselves, Han puts more focus on the hidden aspects such as abandoned spaces, old walls and floors, or traces left on the body; the artist tries to recreate his viewpoint towards the world by projecting subjective impressions through places where they had lost their original intention or purpose. Then he deconstructs and reassembles these landscapes. From 2020, Han has been gradually constructing abstract works with objects such as out-of-date flower-patterned wallpapers or passing time in between seasons. More recently, Han has diversified his way of representation by utilizing various media to make his unique matière extra thinner or by working with the same object with different approaches from conceptual to abstract on multiple canvases.

Han has held solo exhibitions at various venues such as A-Lounge, Seoul (2023, 2017); SongEun ArtCube, Seoul (2020); Willing N Dealing, Seoul (2013), and has participated in numbers of distinguished exhibitions in and out of Korea, such as Books and Things, Helen J Gallery, Los Angeles (2022); Summer Love, SongEun, Seoul (2022); Tracing, Detouring, Piercing, Hakgojae Chungdam, Seoul (2020); and Dramatic Scenes, Space K, Gwacheon (2017). Han was part of the residency in Naji Residency, Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul in 2023; and is expected to participate in residency at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Goyang in 2024.
