A-Lounge

손현선(b.1987)은 사물과 세계의 본질을 가능한 한 완전히, 온전히 ‘보고’ 감각하는 일에 관심을 둔다. 우리가 자기 신체의 능력을 빌어 대상을 바라볼 때, 종종 대상의 전체를 감각하는 데까지 이르지 못하고, 이는 곧 ‘봄’의 결과가, 감각의 결과가 대상의 본질에 가닿지 못한 것임을 작가는 인지한다. 작가에게 회화 작업은 이 같은 불완전한 감각의 세계를 확장해나가는 행위이다. ‘본 것’과 ‘보지 못한 것’이 회화의 표면에 구현되는 결과를 관조함에 따라 회화가 대상의 본질에 가닿을 수 있는 너비와 깊이를 가늠하고, 자신이 상상하고 감각할 수 있는 세계의 너비를 최대치로 확장해나간다.

Hyunseon Son takes interest in the act of completely ‘seeing’ and sensing the essence of objects and the world as much as possible. The artist recognizes the result of ‘seeing’ – the result of feeling – is not directed to the core aspect of the object, because our bodies’ ability to see something often fails to reach to the point of sensing the wholeness of the object. For Son, the act of painting means the act of expanding the world of incomplete sensation. The artist observes the results of the ‘seen’ and the ‘unseen’ manifested on the surface of the painting, and measures the width and depth created through reaching the essence of the object; then Son reaches out to the maximum expansion of the world where the artist can imagine and feel.

Son graduated from Korea National University of Arts with B.A. in Fine Art. Solo exhibitions of Son’s work have been organized at 5 Percent, Seoul (2022); A-Lounge, Seoul (2021); Chapter II, Seoul (2017); and 176 Gallery, Seoul (2016).
