A-Lounge

오종(b.1981)은 얇은 실, 철사, 쇠 막대, 연필 선 등을 이용하여 장소 특정적 조각을 제작한다. 작가는 최소한의 재료와 개입만으로 공간의 물성을 작품 안으로 끌어 들여와 대상과 대상을 둘러싼 공간을 재인식하게 만드는 작업을 시도한다. ‘드로잉’이라 지칭되는 오종의 조각은 존재감이 희미한 재료들로 쌓아 올려지며, 작업 내의 빈 공간을 파고드는 전시 공간 내의 모서리, 창문, 튀어나온 기둥 등 기존의 건축 요소들과 상호작용한다. 3차원의 공간을 가로지르는 옅은 선과 면은 빛을 받아 그림자가 드리워지며 허구의 입체성을 획득하는데, 관람자는 작업과 그 사이를 메꾸는 공간을 천천히 거닐며 곳곳에 심어진 3차원의 시각적 환영을 현상학적으로 경험할 기회를 얻는다. 이로써 작가는 자신의 작업이 일종의 형식적 서사를 전달하는 시각적 시가(詩歌)로서 수용되는 방식을 탐구하고자 한다.

홍익대학교 조소과를 졸업한 뒤 뉴욕의 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아트(School of Visual Art)에서 석사 학위를 받았다. Jong Oh (b.1981) makes site-specific sculptures using thin threads, wires, iron-rods, and pencil lines. By creating with minimum materials and interference – which then brings materiality of space within his works – Oh tries to recapture the object and its surroundings. Introduced as ‘drawings’, Oh’s sculptures are built up with such oblivious materials; they interact with already existing architectural elements such as corners, windows, and bulged columns inside of the exhibition space. These vague lines and surfaces of the works which transcend three-dimensional space create shadows by the light’s touching them, which results into conjuring up a fictitious space. Viewers can slowly walk along the artworks and the spaces in between, getting the opportunity to experience how such embedded three-dimensional visual illusions can be recognized in phenomenological way. Through this, Oh intends to explore processes for his works to be perceived in some sort of visual poetry that conveys a narrative of formation.

Upon the graduation from the Department of Sculptures at Hongik University, Oh earned MA from School of Visual Art, New York. The artist had solo exhibitions in Korea, the United States, and Spain at venues such as Timothy Hawkinson Gallery, Los Angeles (2023); Sabrina Amrani Gallery, Madrid (2023, 2019, 2018), One and J Gallery, Seoul (2022), Doosan Gallery, Seoul (2021); Marc Straus Gallery, New York (2021, 2019, 2018, 2016, 2013). For distinguished group exhibitions, Oh participated in A Place between Rhythm and Rhythm, Choi Man Lin Museum, Seoul (2023); The Snark: Suddenly Vanishing Away, Gallery 2, Seoul (2021); SongEun Art Awards, SongEun ArtSpace, Seoul (2020); How We Live, Hudson Valley MoCA, New York (2019); Point Counter Point, Art Sonje Center, Seoul (2018); Depot, Galerie Jochen Hempel, Leipzig (2018).
