Ian Ha (b. 1997) works with traditional Korean painting materials to reexamine the essence and form of painting, continually exploring how space is constructed within the screen. Images drawn from the unconscious intertwine, overlap, and are edited together, building up the composition. These layered and accumulated landscapes align with the artist’s painterly study of escaping singular perspectives and fixed formats. Transformed hanji panels, multiple perspectives, collage structures, and printmaking elements that flow in and out of the screen all expand the possibilities of two-dimensional painting, allowing viewers to actively wander through the spaces within the work.

After graduating from the Department of Oriental Painting at Seoul National University in 2022, Ha received an MFA from Columbia University in 2024. He currently lives and works in New York. He has held solo exhibitions at Fragment Gallery, New York (2023), and Rabbit and Tiger Gallery, Seoul (2022). His work has been featured in group exhibitions including Butterfly Dreams, A-Lounge, Seoul; Thesis Show, Wallach Art Gallery, New York; Pass the Mic, Eric Firestone Gallery, New York; Double Vision, Plato Gallery, New York (2024); and in media res, The Blanc Gallery, New York (2023). In 2021, he received Prize for Excellence, 42th The International TAKIFUJI Art Award in Japan.
