Shim Ah-Bin (b. 1976) interprets the principles of life and existence through painting and mixed media, employing a signature visual language that is both simple and intuitive. Based on a clear and orderly aesthetic, her works—expressed through distinct forms and colors—are underlaid with profound thematic depth and the artist’s characteristic sense of humor. Her representative works connect themes of birth, death, and the internal conflicts of human experience with imagery related to golf. Shim frequently employs a compositional method that arranges multiple canvases. Through this approach, the artist reveals the dynamism that emerges between the individual images painted on each canvas and the overall structure formed by the canvases. By using the canvas in a more three-dimensional manner, she seeks to expand the physical boundaries of the medium.

Shim’s technical foundation is rooted in digital media. She studied Film & Video and Time-Based Art at Kaywon University of Art & Design in Korea and at the University of Dundee in Scotland, where she later earned a Master of Science in Electronic Imaging. She has held solo exhibitions at Space Willing N Dealing and Gallery 2 in Seoul, as well as at the Hannah Maclure Centre in Scotland. She has also participated in group exhibitions, including Prism: Nam June Paik & New Media Art, Gyeongnam Art Museum, Changwon (2016); Back to Marginality, Seoul Art Space Geumcheon, Seoul (2017); ZENTRIFIED!, Thomas Park Gallery, New York (2019); and The Drawing: Personal Definitions, SOMA Museum of Art, Seoul (2025). Shim’s works are held in collections including the Art Bank of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA, Korea), the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA, Korea), and the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan (MoCA Busan, Korea).
