A-Lounge

1.5세대 재미교포인 써니킴(b.1969)은 회화와 설치, 영상 등 다양한 매체를 통해 한국에서 보낸 짧은 어린 시절의 잃어버렸던 불안정한 기억들을 다시 재해석하는 작업을 선보인다. 작가는 기억이나 상상 속의 이미지를 넘어 창조와 소멸의 과정이 반복되는 가공된 공간을 구성한다. 작가의 기억 속 이미지들은 다양한 방식으로 분절되었다가 재구성되며 회화 내에 ‘평면-공간(tableau-space)’을 창출해낸다. 기억 속 영원한 순간들은 삼차원의 공간에 현현되는 것처럼 보이지만, 궁극적으로 손에 잡힐 수 없는 이미지라는 점에서 작가는 의도적으로 슬픔의 감각을 재현한다.

작가는 뉴욕과 서울 오가며 활동하며, 1991년 쿠퍼 유니언(Cooper Union) 대학교에서 학사 학위를, 1996년 헌터 컬리지(Hunter College)에서 석사 학위를 받았다. 나탈리 카그 갤러리, 뉴욕(2022); 에이라운지, 서울(2020); 스페이스 비엠, 서울(2013); 갤러리현대 16번지, 서울(2010); 일민미술관, 서울(2006); 갤러리현대 윈도우갤러리, 서울(2004); 갤러리 사간, 서울(2001)에서 개인전을 가졌다. 주요 단체전은 «Blurr», Platform, 브루클린, 뉴욕(2022); «재난과 치유», 국립현대미술관, 서울(2021); «Slatterns», A.P.T Gallery, 런던(2018); «달은, 차고, 이지러진다», 국립현대미술관, 과천(2016); «네오산수», 대구미술관, 대구(2014); «Monologues», 한국문화원, 런던(2011); «Meme Trackers», 송장 미술관, 베이징(2008); «Elastic Taboos», 쿤스트할레 비엔나, 비엔나(2007); «Jersey(new)», Jersey City Museum, 저지 시티, 뉴저지(2004) 등이 있다.

Sunny Kim (b. 1969) is a 1.5 generation Korean-American artist who reinterprets the fragile, fragmented memories of her brief childhood in Korea through painting, installation, and video. Kim constructs a layered, imagined space where memories and visions unfold within cycles of creation and dissolution. In her paintings, personal images are fragmented and reassembled, forming a “tableau-space” that evokes a palpable sense of loss. Although the enduring moments in her memories may appear as three-dimensional scenes, they remain elusive, capturing a deliberate, melancholic quality.

Kim divides her time between New York and Seoul. She earned her BFA from Cooper Union in 1991 and her MFA from Hunter College in 1996. Her solo exhibitions include shows at Natalie Karg Gallery, New York (2022); A-Lounge, Seoul (2020); Space BM, Seoul (2013); Gallery Hyundai 16 Bungee, Seoul (2010); Ilmin Museum of Art, Seoul (2006); Gallery Hyundai Window Gallery, Seoul (2004); and Gallery Sagan, Seoul (2001). In 2017, Kim was selected as one of the featured artists for the Korea Artist Prize by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
