고등어(b.1984)는 오랫동안 식이장애를 앓아왔던 사적인 경험에서 출발하여 자신의 신체가 지각되는 방식에 관심을 가져왔다. 작가는 문학 작품이나 뉴스, 일상에서 마주하는 감상 등을 탐구해 회화 속 인물의 이야기와 이미지를 구축해 나간다. 작업에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 의미를 알 수 없는 오브제나 분할된 화면 등은 어떤 사건이 이제 막 일어날 것만 같은 미스테리하고 언캐니(uncanny)한 분위기를 자아낸다. 그 안에 어렴풋이 암시되는 이주, 노동, 폭력, 욕망, 관계와 고립 등의 서사는 우리가 사회 구조 속에서 반응하며 지각할 수 있는 ‘외연적 신체’를 탐구해보고자 하는 고등어의 태도를 반영한다. 최근 작가는 매체에 따라 내러티브가 달리 전달되는 방식에 주목하면서 영상과 설치 등으로 작업을 확장하고 있다.
국립현대미술관이 매년 주목할 만한 젊은 작가를 모아 기획하는 전시 «젊은 모색»에 2008년 선정되며 작업을 본격적으로 시작하였다. 에이라운지(2021), 소마 미술관 드로잉센터(2017) 등에서 개인전을 가졌으며, «Hexed, Bexed & Sexed», West Den Haag, 헤이그(2023); «Walkie Talkie Shaking», 아트스페이스 보안, 서울(2022); 제11회 서울미디어시티비엔날레 «하루하루 탈출한다», 서울(2021);«VIA Animation Festival», Viborg Museum, 비보르 (2019); «여성의 일», 서울대학교미술관, 서울(2018); «노동을 대하는 예술가의 자세», 인천아트플랫폼, 인천(2016) 등 단체전에 참가했다.
Mackerel Safranski (b.1984) has long been interested in the perception of her body, a perspective shaped by her personal experience with a long-term eating disorder. She draws from literature, news, and daily observations to construct the stories and images of the figures in her paintings. Ambiguous objects and fragmented scenes often appear in her work, creating a mysterious, uncanny atmosphere—as if something is on the verge of happening. The narratives within her work, which subtly hint at themes of migration, labor, violence, desire, relationships, and isolation, reflect her interest in exploring the “external body” as something we perceive and respond to within social structures. Recently, Safranski has expanded her practice to include video and installation, focusing on how narratives shift across different media.
In 2008, Safranski was selected for the exhibition Young Korean Artists, an annual exhibition organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, to showcase promising young artists. She has held solo exhibitions at A-Lounge, Seoul (2021); Soma Drawing Center, Seoul (2017); and participated in group exhibitions such as Hexed, Bexed & Sexed, West Den Haag, The Hague (2023); Walkie Talkie Shaking, Art Space Boan, Seoul (2022); One Escape at a Time, the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, Seoul (2021); VIA Animation Festival, Viborg Museum, Viborg (2019); Matters of Women, Seoul National University Museum of Art, Seoul (2018); and An Artist’s Attitude toward Labor, Incheon Art Platform, Incheon (2016).
