A-Lounge

류노아 (b.1984)는 영속하는 시간과 대비되는 육체의 유한함을 주제로 작업한다. 작가는 개인적 경험에서 출발하여, 인간과 자연 그리고 예술품을 반복적으로 대조하며 인간의 육신이 얼마나 유약한지를 전달하고자 한다. 이를 위해 고대의 유물이나 종교화의 도상을 빌려오거나, 동양화 특유의 섬세한 필치로 크랙과 얼룩 등을 표면에 그려 넣어 시간의 흐름을 의도적으로 만들어 낸다. 반면 현대적 의복을 한 인물이나 전신주, 철길 등 산업화의 산물을 이전 시대의 공간에 그려 넣기도 하고, 작가가 직접 수집한 동시대의 자연 풍경을 오래된 도상들과 병치함으로써 화면 내부의 시간성 또한 교란한다.

서울대학교 동양화과 졸업 후 동 대학원에서 석사 학위를 받았다. 이후 암스테르담의 라익스아카데미(Rijksakademie)를 거쳐 라이프치히 국제 예술 프로그램(Leipzig international art programme)에 참여했다. 2013년 제 2회 종근당 예술지상과 2016년 네덜란드의 버닝 브롱어스 상(Buning Brongers Prijzen)을 수상한 바 있다. 2010년 브레인 팩토리에서의 개인전을 시작으로, 살롱 드 에이치, 서울(2018); 브뤼셀의 c-o-m-p-o-s-i-t-e(2016); 그리고 에이라운지, 서울(2021) 등에서 전시를 가졌다. 이외에도 «구경꾼들», 두산 갤러리, 서울(2014); «종근당 예술지상 2회 수상전», 가나 인사아트센터, 서울(2015); «회화의 시간», 세종미술관, 서울(2019); «Lusus Naturae», BcmA, 베를린(2021); «Bring to Light», 프롬프트 프로젝트, 서울(2023) 등의 단체전에 활발히 참가해왔다.

Ryu Noah (b.1984) explores the finite nature of the human body in contrast to the eternal nature of time. Drawing from personal experiences, he contrasts human fragility with the resilience of nature and art, aiming to convey the vulnerability of the human body. To evoke the passage of time, Ryu incorporates imagery from ancient artifacts and religious iconography, using the delicate brushstrokes characteristic of traditional Eastern painting to depict surface cracks and stains. At the same time, he disrupts historical scenes by introducing elements of industrialization—figures in modern clothing, telephone poles, and railways—and juxtaposes contemporary landscapes he has collected with classical icons, creating a dissonance in temporality within his work.

After graduating with a B.F.A. in Korean Painting from Seoul National University and completing his master’s coursework there, Ryu went on to participate in residencies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and the Leipzig International Art Programme in Germany. He received the 2nd ChongKun Dang Art Award in 2013 and the Buning Brongers Prijzen in the Netherlands in 2016.

Ryu’s solo exhibitions include his debut at Brain Factory in 2010, followed by exhibitions at Salon de H, Seoul (2018); c-o-m-p-o-s-i-t-e, Brussels (2016); and A-Lounge, Seoul (2021). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Onlookers, Doosan Gallery, Seoul (2014); 2nd ChongKun Dang Art Award Winners’ Exhibition, Gana Insa Art Center, Seoul (2015); The Time of Painting, Sejong Museum of Art, Seoul (2019); Lusus Naturae, BcmA, Berlin (2021); and Bring to Light, Prompt Project, Seoul (2023).
