A-Lounge

강동주(b.1988)는 시간의 흐름, 빛과 어두움의 형태를 감각함으로써 세상의 본질을 헤아리고 그 변모를 인지해 나간다. 지나가는 시간, 변화하는 계절과 날씨, 장소와 지형의 탈바꿈을 마주했을 때, 작가는 각 상황을 시각화하기에 유리하고 편안한 지지체와 드로잉 방식을 선택한다. 프로타주, 판화, 연필 혹은 흑연 드로잉과 채색 등 다양한 매체를 혼합해 세계의 생김을 충실하고 꾸준하게 재현해 왔다. 이는 세상을 이해하고 대응하며, 소통하고자 하는 작가의 미학적 방법론으로, 강동주는 자신과 외부를 연결하기 위해 그 관계성을 부단히 기록함으로써 자신의 자리를 가늠하고 그 소용을 모색하고자 한다.

Kang Dongju (b.1988) understands the world’s essence and its transformation through contemplating on the time flow and forms of light and darkness. When faced with passing time, changing seasons and weather, and shift of the place or geography, Kang chooses comfortable yet advantageous medium and drawing to visualize each situation. Mixing various medium such as frottage, prints, pencil, or charcoal drawing, the artist has continuously been recreating the world. This is Kang’s aesthetic methodology to understand, respond, and communicate with the world; to connect herself with the outside, the artist tries to understand his position and usage by constantly recording the relationship between him and the world.

Kang received B.A. and M.A. in Fine Arts at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. Solo exhibitions include: A Glimpse of Light, Gaze Upon Nowhere, A-Lounge, Seoul (2022); At the Window, Tastehouse, Seoul (2018); Seoul, DOOSAN Gallery, Seoul (2016); Subcenter, OCI Museum of Art, Seoul (2013); Black-out, Nuha-dong 256, Seoul (2012). Kang also participated in numerous group exhibitions such as: Walking, Wandering, Asia Culture Center, Gwangju (2023); Boogie Woogie Art Museum, Ulsan Art Museum, Ulsan (2023); Minimalism-Maximalism-Mechanissmmm, Art Sonje Center, Seoul (2022); Yet, We Love, Podo Museum, Jeju (2022); The Middle Land: When Time Unfolds into a Land, ARKO Art Center, Seoul (2021); Rainreading, DOOSAN Gallery, Seoul (2021); The Eye Became Body by Walking into the Hole, Night and Mouth, Art Space Pool, Seoul (2018); We Are Star Stuff, DOOSAN Gallery, Seoul (2018); New Skin: Modeling and Attaching, Ilmin Museum of Art, Seoul (2015). Kang Dongju spent DOOSAN Gallery New York Residency in 2016.
