We can always find the existence of ‘Wandering Eye’ (Artist’s Note, 2023) in Cho Hyori (b.1992)’s works. This eye is one that gazes into all imaginable, every dimension of time and space we can think of when we face with an object which might have belonged, is belonged, or will be belonged in the future. Therefore, Cho’s flat space employs image’s total directional components including front, back, and edges of the space. This ‘Wandering Eye’ not only transcends the horizon limited to the artist’s physical abilities, but also embraces the mechanical and tool-like capabilities using different programs and tools for realizing objects and spaces; also, it is an eye with the intention to gauge independent state of the objects, and the changes within the objects occurring by external stimulation. This can be seen as the artist’s determination to understand the encountered object completely, or as the representation of some aspects of the work materialized from the artist’s perpetual world, where Cho constantly reconsider some of her past or ponder upon the unseen times. Cho’s works consistently questions the categories of the act of ‘seeing’, whereas proposing ways to reproduce the ‘most’ seen results onto ‘flat’ canvas.

Cho Hyori earned B.A. in Painting at Hong-ik University and M.A. in Painting at Korea National University of Arts.
